The administration of US President Donald Trump is preparing to revoke the business and tourist visas of as many as 200,000 foreign nationals who have applied for asylum or are currently seeking asylum in the United States, the Associated Press reported.
According to the report, which was based on documents obtained from the US Department of State, the department is expected to announce in the coming weeks the revocation of B1 and B2 visas issued between 2016 and 2026 to holders who have applied for or are currently seeking asylum, unless the decision is challenged or modified.
The department is coordinating with the US Department of Homeland Security to identify visa holders who entered the US as short-term visitors before applying for asylum in an attempt to remain in the country permanently, State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said.
He declined to provide an estimate of the number of visas that could be revoked, saying that the process is ongoing and that the number of revocations “is fluid” and will be carried out periodically.
