The Saudi Royal Air Defense Forces intercepted and destroyed an enemy drone launched by the Houthi militia on Sept. 15, before it entered the prohibited airspace over the holy city of Makkah, Major General Turki Al-Malki, Spokesperson for Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen, said.
The drone was intercepted south of Makkah, Al-Malki added, noting that the incident marked the second reported attempt to target Makkah, following the first attempt through a ballistic missile launched toward the city on July 27, 2017.
Al-Malki described the latest incident as an attempt to target a site of religious significance to millions of Muslims and to endanger pilgrims, residents and citizens.
The incident would constitute another violation by the Houthi militia and an attempt to provoke the feelings of millions of Muslims.
The security of the Two Holy Mosques and pilgrims is a red line, Al-Malki said, adding that the Coalition’s Joint Forces Command would take the necessary measures against the Houthi militia in response to its hostile actions.
