According to a statement carried by the Iranian state broadcaster’s news agency on its Telegram channel on June 11 morning, the decision was taken in response to what it described as “ongoing provocations by the United States” and following the start of US attacks targeting areas in southern Hormozgan Province.

The statement said: “The Strait of Hormuz is closed from this moment to all vessels, including oil tankers and commercial ships, due to the lack of security in the region, and any vessel attempting to pass through will be targeted.”
