WARSAW — US Ambassador to Poland Tom Rose called for restraint Friday amid escalating tensions surrounding Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal, warning that the confrontation posed serious risks to the country’s stability.”We appear to be witnessing an unprecedented confrontation over the government’s use of state power and the independence and authority of a constitutional institution,” Rose wrote on X.The ambassador described the situation as “very serious,” noting that opposing sides had presented sharply different accounts of the events and their causes. He warned that thousands of demonstrators gathering outside the tribunal could further intensify an already volatile situation.”The last thing Poland needs is a confrontation that spirals into something far worse,” Rose said. While reaffirming Washington’s support for Poland, Rose emphasized that the United States had no right to judge or interfere in the country’s internal affairs. He said the US concern centered on the stability, security and democratic future of Poland, which Washington considers a friend and ally.Rose urged government officials, law enforcement authorities and demonstrators to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could trigger violence or further escalation. He called on all parties to “take a deep breath” and act responsibly.”Poland’s strength ultimately must come from within,” he said, pointing to the country’s people, institutions and shared commitment to the rule of law.The ambassador stressed that Poland’s achievements should not be jeopardized by political disagreements, saying the country had come too far and accomplished too much to allow such divisions to threaten its progress.
