US officials have prepared options allowing Trump to impose the new duties before his temporary 10% global tariff expires Friday, the Financial Times reported today, July 21, citing people familiar with the matter.
The administration plans to use forced labor investigations as the legal basis for the tariffs, to avoid emergency powers limited by the Supreme Court. Fresh duties are expected to start at 10%, with further investigations potentially supporting future increases.
The move follows Trump’s recent decisions to impose 50% tariffs on Canadian goods and 25% duties on Brazilian imports.
