RIYADH — Saudi Arabia ranked first globally in the International Telecommunication Union’s ICT Development Index (IDI), one of the key national achievements highlighted in the fifth edition of the 2026 Sustainability Report in the Communications, Space and Technology Sector. Issued by the Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST), in partnership with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the report was released under the theme “A Sustainable Present for an Empowered Future.” The report highlights Riyadh’s hosting of the Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR-25) under the theme “Regulation for Sustainable Digital Development” and the issuance of the “Riyadh Outcomes for Innovative Regulation.” Other achievements include the launch of a global guide for developing e-waste policies and regulations to support e-waste management and strengthen the circular economy, as well as Saudi Arabia joining the board of the Digital Regulation Network, enhancing its ability to help shape digital standards that support sustainable development. in addition, the Kingdom launched an Earth observation platform and the “Shams” satellite to monitor space weather and support space sustainability. Also highlighted are initiatives led by the CST and its partners in areas including the digital circular economy, space sustainability, regulatory capacity building and international cooperation. Included in the report are 14 national success stories in environmental, economic and social sustainability involving more than 25 public- and private-sector entities. These success stories showvace the use of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, space technologies and satellite-based Earth observation, to help address environmental and development challenges and create a sustainable impact for society and the economy. The report also outlines future directions aimed at building a more sustainable digital and space future in support of the Sustainable Development Goals.
