Saudi Arabia condemns Iran’s targeting of Saudi tanker in Strait of Hormuz

RIYADH — Saudi Arabia on Wednesday condemned Iran for targeting the Saudi tanker SIDR as it transited the Strait of Hormuz, an attack that resulted in the deaths of two crew members.The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Kingdom strongly condemned the targeting of the vessel by Iran and expressed its rejection of Iranian attacks against Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait.“The Kingdom also condemns the Iranian attacks targeting Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait, and affirms its full support and solidarity with the brotherly countries in the measures they take to protect their security and sovereignty from any threat,” the ministry said in a statement.Saudi Arabia stressed the need to halt the escalation and respect the security and safety of international navigation, the security of global energy supplies, the principles of good neighborliness, state sovereignty, the UN Charter and international law and norms.The Kingdom also called on all parties to exercise restraint, halt the escalation, respect international law and return to negotiations and peaceful solutions.Saudi shipping company Bahri earlier confirmed that two Filipino seafarers died following the incident involving its vessel SIDR while it was transiting the Strait of Hormuz late Monday.Bahri said the incident occurred at approximately 11:40 p.m. local time on Aug. 31.“It is with profound sadness that Bahri confirms the loss of two of its Filipino seafarers as a result of the incident,” the company said.Bahri extended its condolences to the families, loved ones and colleagues of the two seafarers and said it was providing full support to those affected.The company said it remained in continuous contact with the vessel and was coordinating closely with relevant authorities and maritime industry stakeholders while monitoring developments.The company stressed that the safety and well-being of its personnel remained its highest priority and reaffirmed its commitment to operating in accordance with the highest standards of safety, security and environmental protection.
