Russian strike on Kyiv kills 1 as Ukraine hits Russian energy targets

KYIV — A Russian overnight missile and drone attack on Kyiv killed one person and injured 16 others on Sunday, Ukrainian authorities said.The assault began around 1:30 a.m. local time and lasted for several hours, with explosions reverberating across the capital.Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia launched 41 missiles, including 25 ballistic missiles, along with 125 attack drones. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said most of the missiles were aimed at Kyiv.The strikes ignited fires in five districts of the capital, damaging residential buildings, office and industrial facilities, a dormitory and vehicles, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.Emergency crews rescued four people from a burning home in the Sviatoshynskyi district and evacuated residents from a three-story building in the Shevchenkivskyi district, where one person was later found dead. Additional fires broke out in the Solomyanskyi, Desnianskyi and Dnipro districts.Russia’s Defense Ministry said it targeted facilities linked to Ukraine’s military, including sites producing Flamingo drones and components for Neptune guided missiles, as well as a postal terminal it claimed was being used to assemble drones, robotic systems and electronic warfare equipment.The latest attack comes as Ukraine continues to face shortages of U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems, regarded as the country’s most effective defense against Russian ballistic missiles.US President Donald Trump has said he is prepared to grant Ukraine licenses to manufacture Patriot interceptor missiles domestically, although no timeline has been announced.Meanwhile, Ukraine stepped up attacks on Russian energy infrastructure.Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces struck three oil depots and another fuel-related facility in Russia’s Stavropol region, while also targeting three Russian tankers in the Black Sea.Stavropol Governor Vladimir Vladimirov confirmed Ukrainian drone attacks caused fires at industrial facilities in two locations but reported no casualties. Russian media suggested multiple oil depots may have been hit.Separately, the Caspian Pipeline Consortium said strikes damaged two oil tankers at its terminal near the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, temporarily suspending oil loading operations. A fire aboard one tanker was extinguished without casualties or oil spills, and the company did not identify who carried out the attack.Russia’s Defense Ministry said its air defenses intercepted 140 Ukrainian drones overnight across eight regions, annexed Crimea, and the Black and Azov seas.In Russia’s Kursk region, Ukrainian drones struck four apartment buildings, injuring one person and sparking a fire, according to regional authorities.
