WASHINGTON — Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan won the Minnesota Democratic Senate primary on Tuesday in the latest victory for an insurgent progressive over the party’s establishment.Flanagan defeated centrist Rep. Angie Craig with a pledge to fight the influence of corporations and confront Republican President Donald Trump.“For months now, I have been telling you that this campaign was about the many versus the money,” Flanagan said as she celebrated her victory in Minneapolis. “Well guess what? The many just won.”The outcome was another sign of progressive energy among Democratic primary voters. It comes a week after Abdul El-Sayed won a bitter and divisive primary in Michigan that fired up the left and fueled anxiety among party leaders that Democrats will alienate moderate swing voters.The result was less clear in Tuesday’s primary for Wisconsin governor, where democratic socialist Francesca Hong and moderate David Crowley were in a tight race as of Wednesday morning.Flanagan will be the front-runner in the general election contest against former NFL sideline reporter Michele Tafoya, who won the GOP primary Tuesday. Minnesota voters haven’t elected a Republican to a statewide office since 2006.Meanwhile, Rep. Ilhan Omar won the Democratic primary in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District on Tuesday, according to US media projections.Omar, a fourth-term Democrat representing a district centered in Minneapolis, captured over 80% of the vote against several primary challengers, according to CBS News.With more than 95% of the votes counted, unofficial results showed Omar leading with 122,640 votes, followed by Julie Trang Le with 10,201 votes and Latonya T. Reeves with 9,131 votes, according to the New York Times.In the Republican primary for the seat, John Nagel was projected to win with 52.1% of the vote.
