BEIRUT — The Lebanese army announced Friday that it had received a shipment of ammunition from France as part of ongoing military cooperation aimed at strengthening its operational capabilities amid mounting security challenges. In a statement, the Lebanese Army Command said the ammunition arrived at the Port of Beirut as a donation from the French authorities. The army said the shipment was part of continued cooperation between the Lebanese and French armed forces and was intended to support its ability to carry out military and security responsibilities. The statement did not disclose the type, quantity or value of the ammunition delivered. The French shipment followed the delivery of military assistance from the European Union on Thursday, including engineering and transport vehicles, electricity generators and other equipment.According to Lebanon’s official news agency, the EU assistance was intended to strengthen the army’s operational and logistical capabilities as it carries out missions across the country. In late September, the Lebanese army also received 47 Humvee military vehicles and five trucks at the Port of Beirut under US military assistance programs. The successive deliveries come as Lebanon’s armed forces face growing security challenges amid continued Israeli military operations.Israel has carried out attacks on Lebanon since March 2, resulting in thousands of casualties, according to the report. On June 26, Lebanon and Israel signed a US-sponsored framework agreement in Washington providing for a gradual Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory and the deployment of the Lebanese army in areas vacated by Israeli forces. However, Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon have continued despite the agreement.Israeli forces also remain in control of parts of southern Lebanon, including territory occupied for decades and areas seized during more recent military operations.
