BAGHDAD — Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi will travel to Washington on Monday for talks with US officials aimed at strengthening bilateral relations, with several oil and gas agreements expected to be signed during the visit.Government spokesperson Haider al-Aboudi said Zaidi will lead a high-level delegation and is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump, according to the state-run Iraqi News Agency (INA).Aboudi said the two sides are expected to sign memorandums of understanding covering the oil and gas sectors, including agreements to bring in specialized US companies to expand Iraq’s production capacity and develop alternative export routes to reduce the impact of disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.The discussions will also address Iraq’s ongoing efforts to place all weapons under the exclusive control of the state, he added.The Washington visit will be Zaidi’s first official foreign trip since taking office in May, when he succeeded Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.
