RIYADH — The Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee and the Olympic Council of Asia have agreed to postpone the hosting of the Asian Winter Games 2029 to a later date to be determined, opting instead to stage a series of individual winter sports championships in the Kingdom during the current phase. The decision aims to promote winter sports, build a broader base of participants and practitioners, and allow additional time to prepare for future editions of winter competitions with increased athlete representation from Saudi Arabia and the wider West Asian region. The move reflects close strategic coordination and cooperation between the two bodies, underpinned by a strong partnership and a shared commitment to advancing sports development in the region, particularly the long-term future of winter sports in Asia. The Olympic Council of Asia praised Saudi Arabia’s ongoing efforts to establish sustainable plans for winter sports, noting that the agreed strategic direction places the long-term interests of winter sports in Asia at the forefront. The OCA added that the approach would support a gradual, technically sound pathway for launching a new phase of winter sports development in West Asia. For its part, the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee reaffirmed the Kingdom’s continued commitment to developing sports across all disciplines, including winter sports. This commitment will be pursued through athlete development programmes, enhanced infrastructure, and the hosting of a range of ice-based events and competitions.
