US President Donald Trump l agreed to postpone the imposition of 50% tariffs on goods imported from the European Union until July 9, following a phone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

“We had a very nice call, and I agreed to move it,” Trump told reporters on May 25 as he returned to Washington, according to Bloomberg.

Von der Leyen earlier stated in a post on X that Europe is ready to engage in fast and decisive negotiations, but noted that reaching a solid agreement would require time—until July 9, the original deadline for the 90-day suspension of mutual tariffs.

In April, Trump announced reciprocal tariffs of 20% on European goods but later decided to temporarily reduce them to 10% until July 9. However, with failure to progress in the talks between both parties, Trump threatened to impose 50% tariffs on EU imports starting June 1.
