US President Donald Trump said that his team is discussing imposing a 10% tariff on all imports from China starting as soon as Feb. 1.

He told reporters at the White House, “We’re talking about a tariff of 10% on China based on the fact that they’re sending fentanyl to Mexico and Canada”, “Probably Feb. 1 is the date we’re looking at,” he added.

Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, is an addictive drug that has led to tens of thousands of deaths annually in the US due to overdoses, he said. Trump explained last Friday that he spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping over the phone on fentanyl and trade.

The latest statement comes after Trump disclosed intention to propose 25% levies on Mexico and Canada, starting from Feb.1.
