Saudi authorities step up crackdown on water leaks to prevent road flooding Saudi authorities step up crackdown on water leaks to prevent road flooding

RIYADH — The Ministry of Municipalities and Housing and the Saudi Water Authority have intensified joint efforts to address water leaks and prevent road flooding across cities in the Kingdom. The collaboration clarifies regulatory responsibilities under Article 57 of the Water Law.The Saudi Water Authority is responsible for handling leaks and breaks in water and sewage networks, while the ministry monitors road flooding and water accumulation that directly affects the urban environment.Officials said network breakages remain among the primary causes of water pooling in public spaces. The integrated framework aims to accelerate response times, reduce environmental and structural damage, and curb visual pollution caused by uncontrolled water flow.Regulations stipulate fines of up to SR3,000 in cases where water flow leads to road flooding, with violators required to promptly address the source of the issue.Water extending beyond property boundaries is classified as a municipal violation requiring immediate correction.Residents have been urged to report incidents through unified digital channels, including the Balady app’s “Capture and Send” service and the Saudi Water Authority’s official platform, noting that early reporting helps speed up remediation. The two entities confirmed that continuous inspection campaigns are underway to monitor compliance and strengthen field response. The measures fall under the “More Beautiful Cities” initiative, which seeks to regulate the urban environment, reinforce coordination among relevant authorities, and advance sustainability and quality of life in cities across the Kingdom.
