The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) commenced the implementation of projects under the third phase of the program to develop ring roads and main road corridors in the capital.

The phase includes six projects with a total cost exceeding SAR 8 billion, aimed at enhancing the transportation system in Riyadh, improving connectivity across the city, and positioning it as a major hub for sustainable transport and logistics services in the Middle East.

The initiative also seeks to strengthen Riyadh’s status as one of the world’s leading capitals, in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.

The projects under the third phase, which will be implemented over a period of three to four years, include the following roads.

The Jeddah Road Development Project, spanning 29 kilometers, aims to improve road efficiency and expand lanes to accommodate increasing daily traffic. The project includes the construction of 14 bridges and five main lanes, with a capacity of up to 353,000 vehicles per day.

The Taif Road Development Project, with a length of 15 kilometers, aims to improve traffic flow and enhance connectivity between the southern and western districts and the capital. The project includes four bridges, four main lanes, and two tunnels, with a capacity of 200,000 vehicles per day.

The Thumamah Road Development Project – Eastern Section, extending eight kilometers, includes the construction of three bridges and three tunnels. The project links key corridors in northern and eastern Riyadh and has a capacity of 200,000 vehicles per day.

The King Abdulaziz Road Development Project – Northern Section, with a length of 4.7 kilometers, aims to enhance traffic quality and increase the network’s daily capacity to 450,000 vehicles. The project includes four bridges, four main lanes, and one tunnel.

The Othman bin Affan Road Development Project – Northern Section, spanning 4.3 kilometers, includes the construction of seven bridges and improvements to road lanes to enhance traffic flow in northern Riyadh, with a capacity of 500,000 vehicles per day.

The Engineering Modifications Project for Congested Locations (Second Package) aims to improve eight locations across Riyadh’s road network through engineering solutions designed to reduce congestion, enhance intersection efficiency, and increase average capacity by 40–60%.

The RCRC has developed a comprehensive traffic diversion management plan for roads affected by construction works, in coordination with relevant authorities, to ensure the highest possible traffic flow efficiency during the implementation period.

In February 2020, Crown Prince, Prime Minister and RCRC Chairman Mohammed bin Salman directed the development of ring roads and main road corridors in the city.

The RCRC announced the launch of the first phase of the program in August 2024, which included four projects at a total cost of SAR 13 billion, followed by the announcement of the second phase in February 2025, comprising eight projects with a total cost exceeding SAR 8 billion.
