Brazil’s Lula says Maduro should face trial in Venezuela, not abroad Brazil’s Lula says Maduro should face trial in Venezuela, not abroad

NEW DELHI — Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said Friday that Nicolás Maduro should be tried in his own country rather than in the United States, where he is currently detained. Speaking during a visit to India for the Artificial Intelligence Summit, Lula said that if Maduro is to stand trial, it should take place in Venezuela and not in a foreign courtroom. “What matters now is to re-establish democracy in Venezuela,” Lula said in an interview with India Today TV.“And I believe that if Maduro has to be tried, he has to be tried in his country, not abroad.” Maduro was taken from Caracas by US forces earlier this year and brought to New York, where he faces federal charges accusing him of overseeing a cocaine-trafficking network with international drug cartels. Lula argued that the international community should not set a precedent where one country captures a sitting head of state, saying such actions risk undermining global norms. He also noted that Brazilian citizens accused of crimes abroad should similarly be tried within Brazil under their own legal system.
