GAZA CITY — Israel carried out new strikes in Gaza overnight Tuesday as it marked the third anniversary of the October 7 attacks by Hamas.Palestinian health officials said the strikes killed at least two Palestinians, with one killed near Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City and the other in a separate strike nearby.Loud bangs across the border in Gaza were audible from the site of the Nova music festival just as family members gathered at dawn to mourn the more than 300 revelers killed three years earlier.Al-Shifa hospital confirmed two people killed in an Israeli strike overnight.Gaza’s civil defense identified one of the dead as Mohamed Tamous and said he was a volunteer for the agency, which serves as an emergency rescue service under Hamas. The Israeli military told Reuters the two strikes targeted militants. The strikes come a day before the third anniversary of the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel, which led to Israel’s assault on Gaza. The Hamas-led attacks killed some 1,200 people and saw 251 hostages taken to Gaza. Palestinian authorities say more than 74,000 people have been killed in Israel’s subsequent assault on the enclave.Israel, which says Hamas has been rearming and launching attacks in violation of a ceasefire, has stepped up strikes on the group in recent weeks.Hamas has denied trying to carry out attacks or rebuild its arsenal and accuses Israel of undermining the Gaza peace deal.Gaza health officials have said at least 1,400 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since last October’s ceasefire. Israel says four of its soldiers have been killed by militants in Gaza over the same period.Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Monday vowed there would be no Hamas rule in Gaza as he attended a memorial event in Jerusalem.Netanyahu said, “We have achieved enormous accomplishments, but there are still missions ahead of us, and we intend to complete them.”“There will be no Hamas rule in Gaza,” he added, vowing to continue targeting anyone who was involved in the attack.Since Hamas’ October 2023 attack, Israel has fought wars on several fronts, including against Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.Last year’s US-brokered Gaza ceasefire calls for eventual reconstruction of the territory. But little progress has been made towards implementing a deal to end the conflict that includes terms for Hamas to disarm and Israel to withdraw its troops.President Donald Trump’s year-old plan to end the Gaza war has stalled, with Israel mounting near-daily attacks and occupying around two-thirds of the shattered enclave. The initial phase resulted in a ceasefire on October 10, 2025, and secured the release of the last remaining hostages in Gaza, along with freedom for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners and detainees held by Israel.
