Tuesday marks last day of summer as autumnal equinox approaches Tuesday marks last day of summer as autumnal equinox approaches

JEDDAH — Tuesday, Sept. 22, marks the final day of summer in the Northern Hemisphere ahead of the arrival of the autumnal equinox on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 3:05 a.m. Makkah time, when the sun appears to cross the celestial equator, moving from north to south. Majed Abu Zahra, president of the Jeddah Astronomy Society, said that the astronomical onset of autumn does not immediately bring a noticeable drop in temperatures. The lingering effects of summer heat typically persist for some time before temperatures gradually decline over the following weeks, becoming more pronounced as November approaches, depending on each region’s climatic characteristics. He also noted that the autumnal equinox marks a shift in daylight conditions for regions near the Arctic Circle. As the period of continuous summer daylight ends, the hours of darkness increase, creating favorable conditions for observing the aurora borealis during the longer nights ahead.
