US commercial oil inventories declined during the week ended Aug. 28, according to data released Wednesday by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).
The decline, the first in five weeks, is much higher than analyst expectations of a drop by 300,000 barrels.
It reflects strong demand in the US during last week, amid continued drawdowns from inventories to overcome the repercussions of the war in the Middle East.
