US oil inventories rose by 2.48 million barrels in the week ended May 17, the American Petroleum Institute (API) data showed.

Gasoline stocks rose by 2.09 million barrels during the past week, while distillate stocks (including diesel and heating oil) decreased by about 320,000 barrels.

Meanwhile, Brent crude futures for July delivery fell 1%, or 83 cents, to close at $82.88 per barrel on May 21. WTI crude for June delivery fell 0.7%, or 54 cents, to record $79.26 per barrel.
