Signing ceremony
The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) announced the signing of an agreement between Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT) and French shipping group CMA CGM to develop and operate the fourth container terminal at Jeddah Islamic Port, with an investment of approximately SAR 1.6 billion.
The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the French-Saudi Investment Roundtable held in Paris, attended by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and French President Emmanuel Macron.
The project aims to develop and operate the fourth container terminal, with an annual handling capacity of approximately 2.6 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), under RSGT’s existing concession.
The project includes developing deep-water berths capable of accommodating the latest generations of ultra-large container vessels, equipping the terminal with advanced operating technologies and 10 new ship-to-shore (STS) cranes. This is expected to improve handling efficiency, productivity, and service reliability, while increasing the port’s capacity to handle growing container and vessel volumes.
The project will also strengthen Jeddah Islamic Port’s ability to attract global shipping lines and services, increase cargo flows, and expand its connectivity with international markets, leveraging its strategic location on the Red Sea and along maritime trade routes linking Asia, Europe, and Africa. This will support smoother import and export flows and enhance supply-chain efficiency and resilience.
The fourth terminal will be developed adjacent to RSGT’s existing terminal complex at Jeddah Islamic Port. It will operate as a specialized container-handling terminal under the planned joint venture between RSGT and CMA CGM, adding capacity and enhancing the port’s operational flexibility and its role as a key gateway on the Red Sea connecting global trade routes.
