TASHKENT — The four-member Saudi informatics team won three international awards at the 38th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI 2026), raising the Kingdom’s total number of awards throughout its participation in the competition to 14. Hosted by Uzbekistan from August 9 to 16, the Olympiad brought together 386 students representing 97 countries. Saudi student Mohammed Nasser Al-Asmari, from the Royal Commission for Jubail Education Department, won a silver medal, marking the Kingdom’s first silver medal in the history of its participation in the IOI. Student Sultan Abdulrahman Al-Aiban, from the General Directorate of Education in the Riyadh Region, won a bronze medal, while Saad Bandar Al-Arifi, also from the General Directorate of Education in the Riyadh Region, received a certificate of recognition. The Saudi students underwent training and preparation under the supervision of the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba), in strategic partnership with the Ministry of Education, as part of Mawhiba’s International Olympiads Program and with the sponsorship of Tatweer Education Holding. First held in 1989, the International Olympiad in Informatics is one of the world’s most prestigious international scientific competitions in computer science. Participants compete individually to solve problems requiring advanced skills in problem analysis, algorithm design, data structures, programming, solution testing and verification.
