The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) has begun construction of the Najm Al-Din Al-Ayoubi interchange bridges, marking one of the first phases of the Jeddah Road Development Project.
According to an RCRC statement, this phase includes two main bridges serving traffic in both directions, in addition to two U-turn bridges.
The 29-kilometer Jeddah Road Development Project includes 14 bridges and expands the road to five main lanes in each direction, increasing capacity to more than 350,000 vehicles per day, including pedestrian bridges to improve road safety.
The project will be accompanied by a comprehensive traffic management plan coordinated with relevant authorities, with the first phase of a temporary traffic diversion beginning on Aug. 2.
The diversion includes closing the westbound ramp from Jeddah Road leading to the Al-Ayoubi intersection, with traffic rerouted to local roads north of Jeddah Road while four lanes in each direction remain open through the temporary diversion.
The Jeddah Road Development Project is part of the broader Ring Roads and Main Corridors Development Program launched by the RCRC to develop more than 500 kilometers of Riyadh’s road network.
The program aims to upgrade existing arterial roads, improve connectivity, and build new roads across the capital.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman directed in February 2020 the development of Riyadh’s ring roads and major corridors to improve the city’s transport network, strengthen connectivity, and position Riyadh as a regional hub for sustainable transport and logistics services in the Middle East, according to Argaam’s data.
The program includes the construction and development of 500 kilometers of road infrastructure through new roads, upgrades to existing corridors, and improved integration across the capital’s road network.
