NEW YORK — Saudi Arabia reaffirmed support of Arab countries for the United Nations and its role in promoting global peace, security, and sustainable development.On behalf of the Arab Group, Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Dr. Abdulaziz Alwasil announced this while delivering a speech during the hearing of UN Secretary General candidate María Fernanda Espinosa. Alwasil expressed the Arab Group’s commitment to working with the next secretary-general to strengthen the organization’s effectiveness and uphold its principles. The Saudi envoy raised a number of key issues, including safeguarding respect for international law, enhancing the United Nations’ role in supporting the Palestinian cause and the implementation of relevant international resolutions, and ensuring continued support for UN entities, including the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Alwasil further underscored the need to address the United Nations’ financial challenges while strengthening support for developing countries and accelerating the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
