A US-Iran memorandum of understanding (MoU) that President Donald Trump said could be signed within a few days calls for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and phased sanctions relief for Tehran tied to compliance, Axios reported, citing a diplomat from a mediating country and a US official.

The MoU also provides for a 60-day extension of the ceasefire, including in Lebanon, during which nuclear negotiations would take place. It outlines a framework for addressing Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium, although any measures related to Iran’s nuclear program would be subject to a second, more detailed agreement.

The diplomat said the US and Iran had agreed on the text of the deal, but noted that it still requires final approval.

Two sources familiar with the matter said that, as of Thursday evening, the agreement had been approved at senior levels within Iran, although it was unlikely to have received the endorsement of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
