US drains strategic petroleum reserve to a two-year low amid record crude withdrawals
The US strategic petroleum reserve fell to its lowest level in two years after a record crude drawdown last week, as the US stepped up withdrawals amid efforts to stabilize energy markets.
The move comes as the administration of US President Donald Trump seeks to release 172 million barrels as part of a coordinated global effort to calm volatile oil markets.
The US withdrew 9.9 million barrels from the reserve last week, bringing total stocks down to about 374 million barrels, the lowest level since July 2024, Reuters reported, citing data from the US Department of Energy.
The department previously offered around 92.5 million barrels of crude from four storage sites in April, with 53.33 million barrels allocated and sold last week, marking the largest weekly sale of the year.
