US billionaire Warren Buffett, Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, warned that the proliferation of nuclear weapons is making the world more dangerous, saying the prospect of Iran acquiring a bomb would heighten the risk of a catastrophic conflict.
Speaking to CNBC, the investor known as the “Oracle of Omaha” said the growing number of nuclear-armed states has fundamentally altered the global risk landscapes, expressing deep concern over such weapons falling into the hands of leaders facing intense political pressure.
Buffett noted that the existence of nine nuclear-armed countries today amplifies concerns compared to when the nuclear race was limited to just two powers, highlighting rising geopolitical tensions involving Iran and North Korea. He added in a pessimistic tone: “I would say that one way or another … in the next 100 years — maybe it’s 200 years, who knows — something will happen to cause it to be used”.
