JERUSALEM — Israel said Tuesday it had killed Iran’s top security official Ali Larijani and Basij commander Gholamreza Soleimani in overnight airstrikes. In a statement, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the two were “eliminated” in strikes carried out overnight. The Israeli military said Larijani, head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, was killed in a “precise strike” near Tehran, describing him as “the de facto leader” of the Iranian regime. It added that Soleimani, commander of Iran’s Basij forces, was also killed in a separate airstrike.Israeli media had earlier reported that both officials were among the targets of the overnight operations. There was no immediate response from Iranian authorities regarding the claims. The reported strikes come amid ongoing hostilities following joint U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran that began on Feb. 28.The campaign has reportedly killed around 1,300 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
