TEHRAN — Mojtaba Khamenei has been appointed Iran’s new supreme leader, succeeding his father Ali Khamenei, according to a report by Press TV late Sunday.The decision was taken by the Assembly of Experts after Ali Khamenei was killed in a US-Israeli airstrike on Feb. 28.Mojtaba Khamenei, a mid-ranking cleric with close ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, is expected to lead the country during what Iranian officials described as a sensitive period.Iran’s security chief said the new supreme leader is capable of guiding the country under the current circumstances.The Revolutionary Guards and the Iranian military also pledged allegiance to Mojtaba Khamenei following the announcement.
