MOSCOW — Russia claimed on Monday that the United States is no longer ready to implement its own proposal to end the conflict in Ukraine, which was presented to Moscow during presidential-level talks in Anchorage, Alaska, in August 2025.Despite the dialogue and agreements reached at the Anchorage meeting, the American side continues its policy of containment and pressure on Russia, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with the BRICS TV channel.”Besides the fact that they supposedly proposed something regarding Ukraine and we were ready, and now they are not ready, we also do not see any bright future in the economic sphere,” Lavrov said. The top Russian diplomat said Washington imposed sanctions on Russian oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil after what he described as “constructive talks,” and accused the US of waging a “war” against tankers on the high seas.Other measures, he said, include pressure on partners such as India to avoid purchasing Russian energy, mirroring earlier pressure on Europe, forcing it to purchase “exorbitantly priced” American liquefied natural gas.”Europe has long been banned from buying Russian energy resources. In other words, the Americans have declared their goal of economic dominance.”Lavrov stated that the US is “deliberately” pursuing economic dominance and control over global energy routes using methods unacceptable to Russia.Moscow, for its part, is seeking ways to protect its interests, including by creating alternative payment methods and developing cooperation with other countries. The minister further noted that Washington is trying to control military-technical ties between Russia and its allies.”They are trying to control our trade, investment cooperation, and military-technical ties with Russia’s largest strategic partners, such as India and other BRICS members.”Lavrov stated that Russia remains open to cooperation with the US, but the Americans themselves are “creating artificial barriers.”Speaking about NATO, the EU, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the minister described them as “obsolete,” saying they “focused primarily on developing the western part of the continent, assuming they are ‘the masters’ of the rest.”Lavrov said that Russia does not advocate for the abolition of the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank or the World Trade Organization.Instead, he said, Russia seeks to ensure that BRICS countries “receive votes and rights in all these Bretton Woods institutions commensurate with their real weight in the global economy, trade, and logistics.”On security, Lavrov emphasized Russia’s need to reliably ensure its safety amid threats in Europe, where politicians openly speak about war with Moscow. The minister warned that Russia will not allow the deployment of any weapons on Ukrainian territory that threaten Russian security interests.Meanwhile, four people have been killed in Russian drone attacks on Ukraine, the Ukrainian air force said in a statement on Monday. It said Russian forces fired 11 ballistic missiles and 149 drones across Ukraine overnight. The attacks killed a woman and her 10-year-old son in a residential area of the eastern town of Bohodukhiv, as well as a 71-year-old man in the northern Chernihiv region, Ukrainian officials said.Another person was killed and two others wounded in the southern port city of Odesa, according to regional Governor Oleh Kiper. At least nine others, including a 13-year-old girl, were wounded by drones that struck the southeastern Dnipropetrovsk region, according to Governor Oleksandr Hanzha. There was no immediate comment from Russia, which has denied targeting civilians deliberately since it launched a full-scale invasion of its neighbouring country in February 2022.The missile and drone barrage cut power to tens of thousands of people amid freezing temperatures, as Russia continues its winter campaign against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.Ukraine’s national railway operator reported additional attacks on rail infrastructure in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions.Following the attacks, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called for the European Union to impose a complete entry ban on Russians fighting against Ukraine. “This will set the right price for the wrong choices,” he wrote in a post on X. — Agencies
