US President Donald Trump
US President Donald Trump defended the sweeping tariffs imposed on imports to the US, which have caused shockwaves in global stock markets, likening them to medicine.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump downplayed concerns over the losses that have already wiped trillions of dollars from global stock values, according to Reuters.
“I don’t want anything to go down. But sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something,” Trump said, while returning from a weekend in Florida.
He mentioned that he had spoken to leaders from Europe and Asia over the weekend, who hoped to convince him to reduce the tariffs—which are set to take effect this week—by up to 50%.
“They are coming to the table. They want to talk but there’s no talk unless they pay us a lot of money on a yearly basis,” Trump added.
This comes after thousands of protesters gathered in Washington, D.C., and across the US over the weekend, voicing anger at Trump’s management style.
