Kevin Hassett, Director of the US National Economic Council, told ABC News on April 6 that more than 50 countries reached out to the White House to begin trade negotiations.
This comes as US officials work to defend the new, comprehensive tariffs that sparked global disruptions.
Hassett, a senior economic advisor to President Donald Trump, denied that the tariffs were part of the president’s strategy to cause financial market turmoil in an effort to pressure the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates.
He stated that no “political coercion” would be exerted on the Central Bank.
On April 4, Trump posted a video on the Truth Social platform suggesting that the tariffs were intentionally aimed at impacting the stock market in an attempt to lower interest rates.
